John Docherty's Programme Notes on signing Terry Hurlock:

"After a long and patient search for new players to strengthen my first team squad, I was pleased to announce on Wednesday the signing of Terry Hurlock from Reading Football Club for a substantial fee.

I was delighted to get him to sign on the dotted line in midweek, for I know what a good player he is from my two years I spent with him at Brentford.

Terry has all the qualities I admire in a midfield player and I'm sure he will prove to be a great asset to us. By that I mean a player who's committed to win, and Terry's a winner.

I had heard that Terry might be becoming available and it took about a week to secure the deal. In the end I paid a substantial fee - £100,000 - but any player coming to this club would have to be of a high enough calibre to warrant it, and I believe Terry is worth every penny.

It did not take a lot of persuasion to get him here though. Secretly, Terry's always been a bit of a Millwall fan, growing up relatively nearby and with lots of connections with the area, and he told me that playing for us is something he has wanted to do for a good part of his professional career.

We have been working long and hard behind the scenes during the season to improve the squad, al- though we have maintained a good team all the time and that has made the task of finding better players to bring in that much more difficult.

With that nice kind of problem to work around, we studied the quality players but a lot of the fees quoted were far too high and our quest to strengthen the squad was not reaching any success until now.

I feel that we have already accomplished quite a lot this season and can draw quite a lot of satisfaction from performances, especially when you consider that about six of the first team are virtually in their first season in the League. Our promising League posi- tion speaks volumes for that."
